One BIG Ship

The Battleship Massachussetts was commissioned in 1942 and fought throughout WWII. She has the distinction of firing the first and last 16" shells of the war. She fought at Okinawa and Iwo Jima.

Big Mamie displaces 35,000 tons (which seems to be mostly steel and concrete) unloaded, and carries another 11,000 tons of ammunition. She has 9 16" diameter cannon mounted in three triple turrets, 20 5" guns in dual turrets, 72 40mm guns in quad turrets, and 35 20mm guns on deckmounted monopods. She is 680 feet (over two football fields) long, and cost 86 million dollars.
